Congress Passes Bill to Ban or Force Sale of TikTok

Historic Rebuke of Chinese Ownership

April 23, 2024 | 9:44 PM

In a historic move, the United States Congress has passed legislation that could ban or force the sale of the popular video-sharing platform TikTok. The legislation, which passed late Tuesday night, is aimed at addressing concerns over TikTok's Chinese ownership and the potential risks it poses to national security.

The legislation gives TikTok's Beijing-based parent company, ByteDance, nine months to sell the platform or face a ban in the United States. The bill was passed by the Senate on April 23, 2024, and the House of Representatives had previously passed a similar bill in April 2024.

The passage of the legislation marks a significant escalation in the tensions between the United States and China over the ownership of TikTok. The U.S. government has long expressed concerns about the platform's potential to be used by the Chinese government for espionage or propaganda purposes.

TikTok has denied these allegations and has said that it is committed to protecting the privacy and security of its users. The company has also said that it is not subject to Chinese law and that it does not share data with the Chinese government.

The legislation passed by Congress will now go to President Biden for his signature. If he signs the bill into law, it will give ByteDance nine months to sell TikTok or face a ban in the United States.
