Giroud and Mbappe goals see off Poland

Third meeting between the two sides in a major tournament

France booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup with a 3-1 victory over Poland on Sunday night.

Olivier Giroud opened the scoring for Les Bleus in the 44th minute, becoming his country's all-time leading men's scorer in the process. Kylian Mbappe doubled the advantage just before half-time, and added another in the 74th minute to put the game beyond doubt.

Poland pulled one back through Robert Lewandowski in the 90th minute, but it was too little too late. France will now face England in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

This was the third meeting between France and Poland in a major tournament, and the first at the UEFA European Championship. Poland won the third place play-off in 1982, while France won the quarter-final in 2016.

France and Poland both got multiple shots off early in the match, but it was Les Bleus who took the lead through Giroud. The AC Milan striker headed home a cross from Theo Hernandez to give France the advantage.

Mbappe doubled the lead just before half-time, finishing off a move involving Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele. The Paris Saint-Germain forward added another in the second half, curling a shot into the top corner.

Poland pulled one back through Lewandowski in the 90th minute, but it was too little too late. France held on to win 3-1 and book their place in the quarter-finals.
